Whippet the Greyhound and the Squirrel She Never Got Over
Some dogs are clever.
Some dogs are dignified. And some dogs — like Whippet, Martin’s greyhound who refused to answer to anything except “Whippet” — live in their own little universe with its own rules, logic, and questionable life choices.
Her defining moment happened on an otherwise uneventful morning walk. Whippet, all legs and enthusiasm, spotted a squirrel. In a burst of improbable grace, she actually caught it. For one glorious second she stood there, squirrel in mouth, eyes wide, clearly thinking:
“Oh dear. I didn’t think this through.”
So she dropped it.
The squirrel was outraged. It unleashed a furious woodland rant — squeaking, scolding, tiny paws flailing like it was filing a formal complaint with the universe. Then it shot up a nearby tree and vanished.
Whippet, however, never forgot.
From that day on, every single morning — rain, frost, blazing sun — she would sprint straight to that tree. She’d skid to a halt, stare up into the branches with absolute conviction, dance around the trunk, and bark for a full five minutes at… absolutely nothing.
No squirrel. No movement. Not even a leaf twitch.
Just Whippet, reliving her greatest (and most confusing) moment, determined that one day the squirrel would return so she could… well… drop it again, probably.
For a greyhound with a very small brain and a very specific name preference, she had astonishing dedication.
